Seven Sins That Nailed Jesus on the Cross

The sins that nailed Jesus to the cross are as common today as they were two thousand years ago. However, it is not His plan for you to remain in sin. Jesus came to pay the price of sin for all mankind.

1. THE SIN OF GREED
Judas had made an agreement with the Pharisees that the One he kissed would be the one they called the Messiah. Judas felt this would be a way he could get more money. Maybe he thought that Jesus would not actually be crucified. Regardless, he sold Jesus out for 30 pieces of silver.

There are a lot of people today that get so wrapped up in their money that it becomes a god. When greed gets a hold of a person’s life, it perverts judgment and truth. Greed is an evil thing. The sin of greed helped nail Jesus to the cross.

2. THE SIN OF PRIDE
When Jesus was arrested, He was taken to the palace of Caiaphas, the high priest. Two false witnesses came forth and twisted several things Jesus had said in His teachings. The Sanhedrin convicted Him of treason; they slapped Him and beat Him, and threw Him into a dungeon in Caiaphas’ house. The high priest should be the most spiritual, righteous person in the land. What caused Caiaphas to do such evil things? It was pride.

He was an educated man who liked to stand before the people and speak. He enjoyed his position of power and respect. Then the humble son of a carpenter came doing miracles, the people began following after Him, and Caiaphas got jealous. He was so full of pride that he wanted to destroy Jesus – the Son of God! Pride is a terrible thing. The sin of pride helped nail Jesus to the cross.

3. THE SIN OF DOUBLE-MINDEDNESS
After the leaders had taken Jesus inside for trial, Peter remained outside. A young woman walked up to him and accused him of being with Jesus, Peter denied it. He retreated out to the porch where another maid saw him and said to the people, “This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.” Peter denied that time with an oath. After a while as he stood warming himself and passing the time with the other people, someone said to him, “Surely thou also art one of them, for thy speech betrays thee.” Peter began to swear he didn’t know Jesus and even called down curses upon himself! Immediately the cock crowed and Jesus turned His head and gave Peter the look. (Luke 22:61)

The Lord had warned Peter that he would deny Him three times before the cock crowed. Peter was quick to assure Jesus that he would NEVER deny Him – that he was ready even to DIE with Him. Now there in that courtyard was an opportunity for Peter to stand up for the Lord, but because he was afraid of what others would think, he was so double-minded that he denied Christ three times. The sin of double-mindedness helped nail Jesus to the cross.

4. THE SIN OF FEAR
Matthew 27 tells how the chief priests and elders of the people bound Jesus and led Him away to Pontius Pilate. Pilate questioned Jesus, and then he told the people, “I find no fault in him.” The chief priests and elders incited the crowd into a mob and they began to shout, "You are not a friend to Caesar if you do not execute Him!” In the midst of all of this, Pilate’s wife sent a note to him saying, “Have nothing to do with that just man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him.”

Pilate wanted to release Jesus, but because of fear of the mob and the fear that he might fall out of favor with Caesar, Pilate ordered Jesus to be crucified. Fear is a terrible thing – fear to stand up for what is right and holy, what is pure and honest. Fear to go against the crowd. Fear even to call attention to ourselves as being different for His sake. Fear helped nail Jesus to the cross. (cont. on page 7)


In Luke 23 there is the story of how Herod questioned Jesus. Herod had an issue with John the Baptist. Years before, Herod had ordered his own brother executed because he wanted to marry his brother’s wife. John the Baptist began to preach against Herod’s sin of adultery. Herod eventually had John the Baptist beheaded. Now, Herod was afraid that Jesus was John the Baptist come back from the dead.

History records that Pilate, who became fast friends with Herod through this, eventually went insane. He fell out of favor with Caesar and because of his compromise, that which he feared to lose, he did. Ultimately, the sin of lust helped to nail Jesus to the cross.

6. THE SIN OF INDIFFERENCE
Jesus was taken before the mob and they began to cry out, “Crucify Him!!” The custom of the time was that annually the governor would release one prisoner to the people. The Roman soldiers presented the mob with two prisoners - Barabbas (who was a known murderer of women and children), and Jesus. The mob insisted they wanted Barabbas released to them.

The crowd did this because of their indifference to injustice. No one wanted to be responsible. Do you know that when you don’t take a stand in your life against wrong, it is a sin? God looks at it as a sin. But if we repent, God forgives and cleanses and erases those sins. You can be a righteous, godly person that God can use if you get yourself cleansed in the Name of Jesus and take a stand for what is right. The sin of indifference helped nail Jesus to the cross.

7. THE SIN OF BLIND OBEDIENCE

Matthew 27:54 reads, “Now when the centurion and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, ‘truly this was the Son of God.” Those Roman soldiers, because of blind obedience to their orders, executed a just and Godly man. What would have happened if that Centurion had said, “This man is innocent, and I am not going to be a part of this.”? Maybe another soldier would have stood up and said, “I stand with you.” Blind obedience is wrong if you go against what is just. It is a sin. We have to stand by the Word of God and do what God says, in the Name of the Lord. The sin of blind obedience helped nail Jesus to the cross.

These are the same sins that plague us today. Not some unique sin that was only common in the past or in a remote culture. Nor was it the sin of a solitary man who had an evil agenda. However, while it was the plan of our Heavenly Father for Jesus to pay the price of sins for all mankind, it is not His plan for YOU to remain in sin.

Pray this prayer with me out loud (even if you have to just whisper): Heavenly Father, I thank you for the precious price that Jesus paid on the cross for my sins. I confess before you that I have sinned and I accept with a grateful heart the forgiveness of all my sins by the blood of Jesus. I choose this day to live for Christ and receive my new birth in Christ. I accept my new eternal life in Christ. Amen!
